2014: under review

Baby A loves holidays and any reason to celebrate. For the last week, she has been wanting to wear "party dresses". I assume to gear up for New Year's Eve. ;) Secretly, I am really glad about it because I kept wondering when she would ever get to wear her fancy dresses from her benefactors.

We had a fun night doing faux New Years.

Last year I decided to do an end of the year review for the first time and I really liked that it gave me a chance to put things in perspective, rather than just focusing on the micro-moments.

We had some really great moments--

  • I got tenure. Which sort of feels amazing when I think about it (which is really rare, actually). I remember writing the review last year, hoping I would be able to include it tonight. I don't know how I didn't write a blog about it...
  • Baby A turned 2 and had a fun farm party
  • We survived the first year of Chad's new schedule and commute
  • I received a small travel grant, submitted a number of papers, and 3 grants and I'm finishing up teaching my third online class
  • We had great visits from family
  • I learned a lot about outsourcing, toddler emotions, practicing gratitude and optimism, and time management
  • I started reading books again and made new recipes (favorites are smitten kitchen's chicken fajitas, creamy chicken and wild rice soup, and Dr. Wells's cajun chicken pasta)
  • We had a fun Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas

With all of that, we continued to struggle with viral infections/missed days and A was diagnosed with asthma but we have gotten a bit better at handling both.

Just like last year--
This is us. Happy. Counting our blessings and thankful for such wonderful years where the good always outweighs the bad. And hoping that 2015 is even better for us all. Happy New Year to all our friends and family.

25 Days of Christmas: Summary with links

I have created this blog post as a way to remember what I liked and didn't like this month in our advent activities. It's convenient to have the links all in one place as well.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 1--Cookie Man Houses & Kindness Elves

I absolutely adore the idea behind the kindness elves and think they are super cute. Baby A also liked them. I definitely didn't utilize them often or engage in enough kind activities this season. Next year will be better! Next year I also would like to try a graham cracker house.
These were one of my favorite things. We will definitely make them again! I also saw a recipe where you put cookie dough inside the cone and bake them to eat. They look delicious!
This book was a little too old for A. Maybe next year!
This was a really easy day; next year we may try them with contact paper. I imagine they will make a reappearance in February.
We had a really fun day riding the carousel and going to build a bear. The felt tree was a little annoying but I feel sure that we will see it again next year.
This one is a constant.
This activity was totally amazing and I highly recommend it. We likely will reuse the rice in a rainbow rice bin sometime soon.
I'm not sure if A will understand this at age 3 but I definitely think it's a good tradition to maintain.

Another constant--we will always submit something to the holiday party.
These held up surprisingly well for $2 and a little bit of glue!
Next year maybe we will go on a day when there will be carolers and trolley rides. We were underwhelmed.
This was fun and definitely worth going to get out of the house. Hopefully it would be just as fun without the Frozen characters.
I loved this! We will definitely do more experiments as A gets older.
Old favorites.
I will order earlier next year!
Very fun, though I still can't get the nails to last long enough on my hands. I have a few more tricks I will try.
This is another thing I need to start earlier.

Hopefully next year I will remember how to make them a little faster.
This is one I should start later. Santa doesn't need cookies that are almost a week old.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 22--Snowman breakfast

Very fun.
Next year I want to show her this video at the beginning of December. She was completely enamored with it. It may help her want to see Santa next year. Maybe.
Fun day.
Other than prepping breakfast the night before, I wouldn't change a thing.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 25--Christmas!

We had a wonderful day today! Baby A definitely seems to understand things a bit better than her first two years. It was a lot of fun but a little overwhelming for her.

A slept in her special pajamas embroidered by my BFF, Lori.

We hung streamers for her to go through which she thought was pretty funny.

She was pretty excited about her basketball goal, broom, and easel that we left unwrapped.

She enjoyed her stocking as well.

And her new slippers from Papaw.

Elsa doll from Nana!

Her tiger from Grandma and Grandpa.

Anna from Papaw!

It took awhile to get her to take a picture with her stuff.

Funny girl
We didn't forget about the puppies. :)

Lots of playing today.

We had yummy cinnamon roll casserole for breakfast.

And a wonderful dinner!

This was such a wonderful Christmas! I'm a little ready for things to go back to normal, though. We hope that you all had a beautiful day today!
